Oregon in War Against Hunger

Portland-Salem metro area food drive underway & needing to raise thousands of pounds for the hungry

Portland-Salem Metro, Oregon November 20, 2008 -- Tomorrow, November 21st through Friday, December 12th, the 8th Annual Great Holiday Food Drive will be raising food and awareness for the hungry here in the Portland-Salem Metropolitan Area with all donations benefiting Oregon Food Bank and Marion Polk Food Share.

According to Oregon Food Bank website, statistics show that from 2004 - 2006, 11.4% of Oregon's population struggled with putting food on the table. As well, some major food banks here in Oregon, such as the Marion-Polk Food Share, saw bare shelves last year with reserve food supplies dwindling. This year the situation is only worse with the current recession.

In an effort to help, the past seven years the Great Holiday Food Drive has raised the equivalent of over 64,000 lbs of food for the Oregon Food Bank Network. Last year alone we raised the equivalent over of over 11,700 lbs for the hungry.

Considering the hunger emergency here in Oregon, we have set a goal of collecting 12,000 lbs of food during this year's event. There are more than 25 Donation Drop Site Locations throughout the Portland-Salem, Oregon Metro Areas ready as of November 21st to receive food drive donations; making donating to this worthy cause, quick, easy and simple.

The donation drop sites are located at businesses around the metro area and range from medical offices to banks to gyms and more. The variety of businesses and various locations participating in this event will make it easy for anyone throughout the Portland-Salem Metro area to help fight the war against hunger.

Donations may consist of non-perishable canned and boxed foods as well as monetary donations in the form of a check made payable to Oregon Food Bank. The food drive will run for three weeks and end on December 12th so as to get the donations to the local food banks prior to Christmas.
